We Have Bees!

Exciting news, my dear Rhubarb and Honey readers … The Chef and I have bees!

Yes, you can officially count us among the ranks of backyard beekeepers!

The Chef has long wanted to be an urban beekeeper, frequently talking about it throughout the years … and once we moved to the new house, which has a perfect backyard for beekeeping, there really was no reason not to do it.

So we did … and here are a few pictures from the day we brought our bees home!

Bees!

Truth be told, I was always a little ambivalent about becoming a backyard beekeeper, but after watching The Chef place our newly acquired bees into their new hive, I was hooked … they are truly phenomenal creatures! I’m also a bit surprised by how attached we’ve gotten to them as well … while we need to mostly leave them alone for now as they create their new home, we can’t help but watch the hive frequently throughout the day, hoping they’re alright!

I’m sure there will be many bee stories to tell — and when we finally get honey, there will be many new recipes to share — and I’ll do that all right here in my little space on the Internet so stay tuned!

Very cool! We always take a daily walk, and often walk past a house with a couple of bee hives. Sounds like loads of fun. Have you read any of Sue Hubbell’s books? She’s raised bees in Missouri, and knows a thing or two about them. Are chickens next? ;-)

I have not read any of her stuff yet … but I am going to check it out now! Thanks so much for the heads-up … I am devouring as much beekeeping info as I can!
