Yep, St. Louis Is Definitely A Beer Drinking Town

Here’s a little known fact about me: I’m a beer geek. Yes, I do love a good glass of wine and I’ll never turn down a glass of bubbly, but for the most part, I’m a beer drinker. And a craft beer drinker at that. So, it’s exciting to see the boon in new microbreweries popping up in St. Louis, all of which are enhancing our already vibrant craft beer scene.

CNN’s Stephanie Elam recently took a look at what’s behind the new wave of St. Louis microbreweries. The video features interviews with the founders of the newly-opened Urban Chestnut Brewing Co and the soon to be open Perennial Artisan Ales. The video includes interviews with St. Louis Brewery co-founder Tom Schlafly and St. Louis Post Dispatch “Hip Hops” beer columnist Evan Benn.

It’s truly great to see the St. Louis beer scene getting national attention. I’m getting thirsty. Aren’t you?

St. Louis Craft Beer Week Underway

St. Louis Craft Beer Week is underway, and the line up of events is astounding! Here are more details from their press release:

“St. Louis has an unparalleled history when it comes to American beer, and St. Louis Craft Beer Week is a celebration of that history. The event begins on May 30th with the Westport Beer and Brats Festival and culminates on June 5th and 6th with the St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival. Each night of St. Louis Craft Beer week will provide beer lovers with an opportunity to immerse themselves in a small sample of what the city’s beer scene has to offer.

With more than 20 events at over 15 locations throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, beer lovers and beer novices alike will find something that will not only quench their thirst, but will hopefully help them learn something along the way.

Events will include Beer Trivia, Beer Dinners, Beer and Cheese Tastings and of course festivals such as the always popular Brewers Heritage Festival. Some of the locations include the International Tap House, 33 Wine Shop, The Wine and Cheese Place, The Shaved Duck, Schlafly Tap Room, Lukas Liquor, Newstead Tower Public House, The Royale, and Cicero’s.

The eight days of events have been scheduled to provide non-stop craft beer appreciation. For more information, please visit http://www.stlbeerweek.com/.”

I’ve already bought my tickets for the Beer and Cheese Tasting at the Schlafy Tap Room on Wednesday; maybe I’ll see you there?

Chicago!

A few months ago, I went to Chicago for a work conference … but of course, I had a little time to play while I was there.

First stop, Giordano’s for their “world famous stuffed pizza.” Talk about cheesy goodness … and the crust was excellent too. For a great review, check out this piece on Serious Eats.

Mmm ... Pizza!
Another evening involved dinner at Gordon Biersch, a brewery restaurant with 27 locations across the US … and in the effort of full disclosure, the location I dined at is in Bolingbrook, IL (more on that in a minute).

I ordered the blackened fish wrap, which consisted of blackened mahi mahi, pico de gallo, asian slaw, mozzarella, and honey sriracha mayonnaise in a flour tortilla. The flavors were good and I enjoyed the wrap, but the highlight of the meal was the side of garlic fries.

A signature of Gordon Beirsch, the fries are made from “premium potatoes paired with the most famous garlic in the country—none of that whimpy garlic powder—but the best Christopher Ranch garlic, fresh from Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world.” Yeah, I must admit … they were some awesome fries.

Mmm ... Garlic Fries!
To wash everything down, I ordered the beer sampler, which contained small pours of their Golden Export, Hefeweizen, Czech Pilsner, Märzen, Schwarzbier, and a seasonal beer. While I cannot recall what the seasonal sampler was, I do recall that I didn’t care for it … actually, hated would be a better word … but the rest of sampler was great.

Mmm ... Beer!
So, why was I in Bolingbrook? One word … IKEA.

Mmm ... IKEA!
Yep, finally popped my IKEA cherry … and it was great. I had never been to the store before so I had to take the opportunity as I was so close. Unfortunately, I only brought a carry-on to Chicago so I could take home too many IKEA goodies … but I did manage to find a few small things that I couldn’t live without!
