Yep, St. Louis Is Definitely A Beer Drinking Town

Here’s a little known fact about me: I’m a beer geek. Yes, I do love a good glass of wine and I’ll never turn down a glass of bubbly, but for the most part, I’m a beer drinker. And a craft beer drinker at that. So, it’s exciting to see the boon in new microbreweries popping up in St. Louis, all of which are enhancing our already vibrant craft beer scene.

CNN’s Stephanie Elam recently took a look at what’s behind the new wave of St. Louis microbreweries. The video features interviews with the founders of the newly-opened Urban Chestnut Brewing Co and the soon to be open Perennial Artisan Ales. The video includes interviews with St. Louis Brewery co-founder Tom Schlafly and St. Louis Post Dispatch “Hip Hops” beer columnist Evan Benn.

It’s truly great to see the St. Louis beer scene getting national attention. I’m getting thirsty. Aren’t you?

Pi, Pie, and Pi

The great thing about blogging for awhile is that when you’re not feeling like a wordsmith one day, you can regurgitate past content to expose it to new readers. I think today is a great day for that. So, without further ado, a past post about Pi Day with a bit of new content throw in because there is a new “Pi” in my life that I want to tell you about too …

Today, March 14th, is Pi Day … you know … 3.14159265 … yeah, that Pi.
Now, when I hear “Pi,” I don’t think of the symbol for the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. I think of pie (mmm, pie), and now I also think of Pi Pizzeria (mmm, pizza) too.
As for the first “pie,” Alanna Kellogg over at A Veggie Venture has put together a list of pie recipes from pie lovers and food bloggers to celebrate today’s special occasion. [Fair warning: This list is from 2008 so all of the links may not work anymore.] Want to know what my favorite pies are? Check out my previous posts here and here.
Now, on to that other favorite “Pi” in my life …

Pi Pizzeria made it’s debut in St. Louis in 2008, and now has three locations, all going strong. The signature deep-dish cornmeal crust, combined with amazing, fresh ingredients and their commitment to creating ecologically sustainable restaurants, make it my favorite pizza in St. Louis. If you haven’t been yet, get thee to one of their locations soon; believe me, you’ll thank me later.

Want to know what my favorite pizzas are at Pi? I suggest either the ”Western Addition,” which includes mozzarella, spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onions, and garlic. Add some local Volpi salami, and you have a winner. Or you could try my other favorite, the “The Hill,” which includes mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, onions, green bell peppers, kalamata olives, and banana peppers. Chuck and I substitute spinach for the green peppers as those aren’t really our thing, and since this pizza is listed on the thin-crust menu, we asked for it as a deep-dish because Pi’s signature deep-dish cornmeal crust is da bomb. Yeah, I said “da bomb.”

Oh, and if you go to Pi today, you’re in luck because they are celebrating Pi Day (duh) with a number of specials, including $3.14 Schlafly drafts, $3.14 “Euclidean Cocktails”, and a Pi memorization contest at 3:14 pm, in which you have the chance to win a $100 Pi Gift Certificate. Nice.

Happy Pi Day!

St. Louis Craft Beer Week Underway

St. Louis Craft Beer Week is underway, and the line up of events is astounding! Here are more details from their press release:

“St. Louis has an unparalleled history when it comes to American beer, and St. Louis Craft Beer Week is a celebration of that history. The event begins on May 30th with the Westport Beer and Brats Festival and culminates on June 5th and 6th with the St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival. Some of the locations include the International Tap House, 33 Wine Shop, The Wine and Cheese Place, The Shaved Duck, Schlafly Tap Room, Lukas Liquor, Newstead Tower Public House, The Royale, and Cicero’s.
